Caroline’s Corner July 2018

What did you miss at our July meeting? And what will you miss at our August BBQ at the National Liberal Club on the 7th August?

You missed the cool elegance of the Royal Thames Yacht Club on a hot and humid day!

Caroline Evans, Sally Martin and Sue Milton made up our senior, experienced panel with very definite views on the glass ceiling. The discussion ranged around not just the glass ceiling but also the changing ambience of work. Sally’s many years’ experience in Shell have given her the impression that there is a glass ceiling but that it is now higher than it used to be and is still rising. Caroline’s comments were wide ranging and included views on the need to change businesses’ view of maternity leave to include more sharing of childcare between partners. Sue talked about the radical difference between millennials’ attitude to work and employers and older workers’ inherent loyalty to organisations, meaning that companies were having to rethink their retention strategies for key employees. There was a general view that many women got a taste of the Board mentality and environment and opted out, often to start their own business.

Mark Fritz engaged us all with his energetic presentation on ‘Leading Yourself First’. His view that we need to be a role model and walk the talk was accompanied by some very practical ways of increasing our individual effectiveness. If you need to establish a habit, do it for 30 days and it will be embedded in your routine. Mark has done that for himself – he decided that he needed to keep learning, so he spends one hour every day learning something new. He might do it while travelling or waiting for someone, but he always fits it in.
